This publication includes a number of practical recommendations intended to make media and journalists more responsive and to encourage debate within media about the portrayal of children and their rights. The document is divided into various thematic areas, guidelines and recommendations. These include an examination of child rights' legislation; different forms of abuse and exploitation; the media's role in reporting abuse; topical issues such as street children and trafficking; a case study of West Africa; awarenss training for media professionals; and interviewing, photographing and filming children. The report makes various recommendations to media professionals in the areas of training, creating conditions for professional journalism, Codes of Conduct and self regulation, the need for newsroom debate and media literacy training for children. |
